Stoptober is a national campaign that encourages people to quit smoking for 28 days in October. Research shows that if you can make it to 28 days smoke-free, you're five times more likely to quit for good.

Myth Busting – Know the Facts

Here are some common myths about smoking and vaping, along with the facts based on current evidence from the NCSCT:

  • FALSE. Current evidence indicates that nicotine vapes are substantially less harmful than using tobacco, although they are unlikely to be risk-free. Vaping exposes users to far fewer toxins, significantly reducing health risks compared to smoking tobacco. Be cautious of illicit vapes which may contain unregulated ingredients.

  • TRUE. Evidence shows nicotine-containing e-cigarettes, combined with behavioural support, improve quit success compared to behavioural support alone.

  • FALSE. Evidence shows quitting smoking is associated with improvements in anxiety, depression and overall mental health compared with continuing to smoke.

  • FALSE. Even light smoking increases the risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, and low birth weight.

  • TRUE. A significant number of young people currently vape. Stop Smoking services are encouraged to support them in quitting or cutting down.
